Cricket ramblings continue..

Realised that I didnt pay tribute to Nitin (Not u ganji - i mean Goel) - in my last post.. or to Swapnil.. Both fighters to the core - have been invaluable to the team.. and of course there is Esh who has bled for the team ;)

Anyway - this is not about being good to people.. this post is about my take on the strategy - and my attempt to influence team management...

I may trash some people and thier abilities here - but no hard feelings guys - u know how capitalistic worlds are run :p - but seriously - please dont get senti :)

First, Whats working? (pls note how i placed 'whats working' first - in the spirit of positive thinking :p)

a) Our bowling absolutely rocks
(apart from the spin bowler who just plain sucks! and that we dont have a back up for Tapish - come on Bharat/Raff!)

b) Our middle order - Whether its the cool killer tapish, Solid Bakir, Paddu or the substitute middle order batsmen (Bharat, Lal etc) - we always look our best when these guys are in the middle.. singles come easy - the occasional four looks effortless - over the last 6-7 matches - this is usually a phase for 10-15 overs of the match - typically 8-23th over ..

c) No dropped catches yet - and ganjis slip catching nothwitstanding (actually even he got a runout :p) we've been a pretty neat side.. till now at least :)

Whats not working?

a) Our average score is lower than it should be - we should have hit the mediocre sides for at least 200 in each match

b) Our starts are slower than they could be (with restrictions and all that)

c) In the last few overs, the lower order isnt able to accelerate properly, either losing the wickets too fast in a frenzy to go out there and smash the first ball for four or six (read: Raff, Shiv and Paddu are going in too late :p)

My ideas on further improving an already excellent team. Pretty much all of it revolves around being flexible and not planning a batting order in terms of who goes after whom but thinking of who should go at what stage of the innings

So - this is how I believe we should structure our team - comments obviously invited :)

Core middle batsmen : Bakir, Tapish, Paddu, Matt, Bharat - these guys should ideally be there by the 10th over and one of these guys should play on till the end.. Send them at whatever situation they will score at a run a ball - only issue is that we have only 2/3 of this kind and so they shouldnt take too many chances

Single pickers: Lal, Swapnil, Manish, Venkat (?) - these guys should play around the core batsmen - these are our gritty batsmen, who can either stay there while the bowling going well and can rotate the strike and give the core batsmen more strike.. the occasional boundary is a sweet bonus.. :)

Slammers: Raff, Shiv, Nitin Goel - This is the bunch that flinches everytime some1 defends a ball pitched up - and Raff even goes to watch other games cos he thinks esh and Ganji are batting slowly.. Ideally if they play 4/5 overs in the middle - those will give almost 50 runs, now whether u want it in the early part (fielding restriction time), or around the 15th over to speed things up a bit or later in the 24th over onwards - thats completely the captains call but its a shame to have hard hitters sitting in the pavilion till the 27th over and then they need to go slam from ball 1 .. One more thing .. if they are slammers - no point asking them to bat like opening batsmen in the nets - let them have a go.. in the nets too :)

Opening Defenders: Esh, Ganji, Sriram - Sriram can pretty much play in any of the roles we talked about - so lets talk about what the blunters need to do .. Esh and Ganji need to ensure that for the first 5 overs we dont lose a wicket - not too differently from the last match - a little more single taking may help - and a few more of ganjis sweetly timed shots on the legside may actually help us forget the last 2 seasons :p

So nett, keep each of these groups ready depending on the situation of the match..

Anyway - thats the opinion from the bottom of the pyramid - im sure the the view from up there will be a little different..

but on a separate note : here is to Paddu - the glue that holds the splinters together.. Take away his brilliant cricket skills and mind, take away his enthu that lifts the team up or his super-gentlemanly conduct and ull still be left with his ever smiling self (despite pain, tiredness or plain irritation)

(if that doesnt get us up the order raff, nothing will!)

anyway - time to get back to work - i love WFH days :)

the best batsman in the team play at 3, so it should be Matt, Tapish or Bakir (in that order) who should coming after 1st wicket falls. Opening, I agree Shiv there should be one guy who has to taken on the bowling. That neither nitin (the natural mistimer of the ball) or sriram(a typical 80's english bat with great technique) can do.

umm - i agree partly - but i think if you have 4 ppl who can hit - u should try to keep one of them at the wicket at all times and one good batsman..

btw - i think u need to check out ganji now.. and sriram is our master blastar bhai - forgot all the runs last season?

yeah, Finally scoring some runs:).

Sriram is never a blaster, he is a cool opening bat who plays ball according to the merit, but anything short or on the leg to him will disappear. He will never go over the top if you bowl him the length balls, the same goes to Tapish.

vikranth - well - I guess we'll just have to wait for the game against Kaybee, won't we. :)

27,9,29 and top-score in 2 games, good going Nitin. Yes, definitely waiting for the game against P&G. Hope both teams get 11 on the field:)

Shiv - Unlike you, I will go to the point - Problems very well identified but solution sucks!! You should have probably thought of the strategy keeping your own/ biased intents out :-)

Well to build onto the batting strategy, I think we should have a consistent batting line-up so that everyone knows his role in the game...every single match. Flexibility is good and we can have it as plan B or C if our going in plan doesn't work. I agree, we should have one opening batsman who can really scare the shit-out of the opposition & get us to 70+ in 10 ovrs but I would wait for us to first settle into a steady opening stand consisitently!!..mark the work consistently ...100 times.

The big thing we need to fix in our batting is the last 10 overs. We would do good to score 80 or so in them and you know what it doesn't need a boundary every ball, actually just 1 boundary every 2 overs is fine.

On bowling, we really need Shiv or someone??? (everyones welcome incl. me) to come in and change the pace of the game in the middle overs with some good quality spin/slow bowling.

Bakir

Shiv I have a (two) bones to pick:

(i) I am a walking diveristy quota (sri lankan born aussie)!! yet you seem to forget - how come 'Raf' gets all the diversity love =P

(ii) I am one of the openers - if you think 54 from ten is slow, it scares me to think of what you consider fast! It would be great to smash 80 off the first 10 mate but thats easier said than done given the state of the CSC pitch with its incredibly variable bounce + the intention of not losing wickets in order to establish a foundation for the innings - your welcome to try mate =)
Bakir agree with you mate, we tend to lose our heads a little in the last couple of overs, but i think we'll get it right.

Boys - as well as the team is going, lets not get ahead of ourselves, there is a long way to go.

cheers,
Esh
P.S. Agree Raf should get up the order =p

Here are my general suggestions,

1. Have Bakir bat for as long as possible.

Reason - He scores at a strike rate of 125.0 most of the time, demoralizes the opposition, takes the pressure off the other batsmen.

Implementation - Make him open. If he doesnt want to open, make him bat #3. #4 is too low in a 30 over match.

2. If Bakir doesnt want to open, make Paddu do that.

Reason - Hes a guy whose intent is to hit over the top. He does it first ball at any stage he comes in. Hes very effective as well. As far as batting abilities go, he is second only to Bakir.

3. If Paddu doesnt open, he should come in after over 20. Tell someone else to hit out/throw caution to the winds in order to get Paddu in.

Reason - Paddu has the sense to choose balls to hit and farm the lower order in the end overs. I see us getting 10.0/over in the 1st 10 or last 10 if paddu stays.

4. Other contenders for opening dasher slot are Shiv and Raf.

Reason - Obvious

5. Have one steady guy open along with Bakir/Paddu/Shiv/Raf. Ganjee seems a decent choice.

Reason - Ganjee would not be as effective in middle overs as he wudnt run as well. The leg side shots also wudnt get as much value for money.

Well, I am the odd one here. But i agree with Bakir, first get a consistent batting line up, then you can come up with all the strategies.

With the P&G team i know (atleast the players i know)

This will be my order

Sriram
Gajria (i agree with Tapish)
Matt Lumb
Bakir
Tapish
Bharat
Swapnil
Paddu
Shiv
Nitin Goel
??????

Shiv, If you get 54/0 in 10 that's a fantastic start and if you don't convert that into a big score then it's not your opening but the middle order which needs to get their act together

Ok - I think we've crossed the threshold of over-intellectualizing a lovely weekend cricket game. On a lighter note - looks like Vikranth is angling for the P&G coach job next season! :)

Hmmmm

I say we do it the P&G way, test our way through and have some fun. If we are going well and want to test, flip a coin to see who we throw in..Whoever it is Shiv,Paddu,Raf,Swapnil,Nitin, does not matter - you can decline the offer to go in early - The order is to score runs (quickly)...

shiv said...

I tell ya - once a gambler - always one!!

raff - how u got gambling into a cricket batting line-up discussion ill never understand ... but i like the idea - we should go for it..

only thing .. we arent the guys who make the decisions here!

The Pavilion View said...

Nitin, the coach does not decide the batting order:) How about a friendly on 9th June?

shiv said...

Vikrant,

As is obvious - your line-up is wrong coz u dont have the cream of the expatriate community in Singapore - Polska man Raff and the Tam studfarm Esh..

wait till u see the diversity team crack the whip...

shiv said...

hell yeah - why not .. ganji vs vikranth?

lets see who turns up the winner - also - tapish - could be ur last crack at some singy cricketers.. actually given ur going to amrikka - maybe last bit of cricket!

shiv said...

Tapish - i like your thinking - agree to most apart from

a) Bakir/paddu opening - opening exposes ppl to chancy ways of getting out - random extra swing or something of that sort.. our best players shouldnt be exposed..

b) I think sriram should open for sure..

..have been following the scores from here :).. 3rd place in the group with 4 matches played looks pretty good..

with the new guys coming in.. fielding 11 should not be a problem.. :)

..goodluck guys for the match with Kaybee.. would be ther to cheer the team..

Cheers!
